[...] I hate jumping right back on the Microsoft bandwagon but I installed the Release Candidate 1 build this Labor Day weekend. I didn’t get it from MS, and I am not in their select group of people who get to look at it early. But I have a valid product ID, and I found it on BitTorrent. I didn’t really think they would mind - else they would have invalidated my product ID!
David, I think the key might be dual PCI Express slots/cards. I use NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT cards, so I think I could get a fourth monitor to work if I had one avaialabe (each card is dual display)

The weird thing about this "failure to shut down" is that the monitors (all external) go blank, and indicate power is off... but the hard drive is thrashing away. The "primary" monitor (the only one that is a CRT - the others are LCD) keeps indicating that is is flashing between getting a video signal and not. So yeah - I hit the hard reset button after ten minutes or so. If there IS really something still happening, and the OS is "alive" then I should get an indication of what it is doing... instead of three blank monitors and an over-active HD.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I have been using Vista Beta2 as my primary (only on my primary laptop) operating system... when shutting down, I don't have the patience, I hard reboot...

Yes, they are doing something with fast standbye - but in this case it is taking forever when I tell it to "shutdown" - which isn't (or shouldn't be!) any type of standby. And by "a long time" I mean a good ten minutes!

I'm sure this will be resolved though, so it isn't worrying be much - I don't shut down often - and restarting seems to work fairly fast.

About the slow shutting down - isnt Vista pushing this new fast standby (or something), so you're not supposed to shut down?

[...] This post by Rob La Gesse isn’t the first time I’ve heard that build 5536 rocks, but it’s the most convincing that I might be wrong about Vista not being ready by November (which is when it needs to be finished by). [...]
