Barbaro euthanized after lengthy battle

Sad, but I know the horse is no longer suffering.  What a beautiful animal he was though!

PHILADELPHIA – Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday after complications from his breakdown at the Preakness last May. “We just reached a point where it was going to be difficult for him to go on without pain,” co-owner Roy Jackson said. “It was the right decision, it was the right thing to do. We said all along if there was a situation where it would become more difficult for him then it would be time.”

  1. Ken – I grew up with horses and have a lot of repect for them. They are smarter and more loving than most people know (and that’s a shame). They are also majestic creatures – from the “welcome home” whinney to a well trained barrel horse – or one blessed with pure graceful speed like Barbaro – they have always amazed me.

Best of luck getting your song out there!

  2. Hi Rob,

Thank you for making this exception! As you figured out, this song was not written for self-promotion, but in tribute to Barbaro, his fight for survival, and the doctors/medical staff/volunteers (and there were many!) that helped in treating him in his eight-month battle to live.

I’ve read many responses by readers of blogs in reference to his passing and found mixed emotions. There are different walks of life that were (or were not) affected by the grim news. For me, and many others, he was a special horse/spirit who’s inspirational impact was overwhelming.

Thank you again for keeping my original posting for your viewers to see. My sincere hope is to get the song heard by everyone who had followed him so caringly. Although his tragically shortened life has ended, his memory will stay with us always.

  3. Ken – normally I delete posts that are in any way self-promoting (unless they are my own!) – but I listened to your song and enjoyed it. Thanks for the link.

  4. I am a Philadelphia(Pa)-area musician/songwriter who has composed an original song (entitled “Wear Your Crown”) in tribute to Barbaro, his fight for survival, and to the doctors/medical staff/volunteers that helped in treating him throughout his courageous battle.

For all of us who cheered him on, both on and (especially!) off the race track, his battle was/IS truly inspiring.

Written/recorded just days after his passing. The song can be heard at my band’s profile page:

    May his memory live forever..
