I've tried many configurations of FREENAS with many media servers around the house. These are the conclusions I've come to as for working reliably and consistanty with a family of 8 people with the level of tech ability ranging from EXPERT to "where's the power switch?"

First, I've found it best to let FreeNAS be a NAS..and nothing else. don't enable bittorrent, or any of the fluff. SAMBA for AD integration is preferred when tying to a windows domain for security issues. With dual nics bonded, this allows for best performance.

Now, as for the XBOX solution, we have settled on 2. Since the Xbox is "retarded" at decoding most encoded files found on the net or encoded at home with modern encoders, it prefers the limited WMV format as this is MSFT's answer to the media studios to make them happy and believe their content is safe. DRM blows for this reason alone.

Solution 1) XBMC. Since we have pcs next to our tvs as well as xboxes, we run xbmc which does well at serving up media files for xbox as well.

Solution 2 "preferred") Tversity /free or pro you decide. This is the all in wonder way to serve media files to the xbox. Install it on a medium to decently performing pc with windows 7 and the MP4 codec package of your choice (it will prompt you to download one and install if not detected) and turn on "on the fly encoding ALL the time". This will produce a stream that xbox enjoys which means you get beautiful picture no matter what the source material is. MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV or other divx, h.264 derivitive. It also produces a stream your network can handle even if the file is 8 gigs which means your xbox wont stutter when viewing the file.

XBMC and Tversity are both free. don't take my blind word for it. do some research and gain some knowlege. We've dropped expanded cable and gone to in house on demand system. With the xbox able to read the movies now, even our 8 year olds are able to pull up their favorite episodes of icarly, etc, on demand!

“Run it like you own it, but never forget you don’t” is solid advice. I just happen to like your insights about people.

Wisdom is often limited to certain areas of our lives - we can be so insightful in certain areas of our lives only to have a blind spot in others. It sounds like Charlie was just as vulnerable to that human condition as the next guy. What makes you someone I really love listening to Rob is that you're able to learn from someone else's mistakes. You're able to cull the good from the not-so-good and apply it down the road.

That, and you're just a genuinely good guy.

it means a consciousness developed this world and it lives through us. People say we need god or look to god. Well God needs us. This consciousness wants to experience physical life. It wants you to go swimming and run and make love. The "infinite" needs us to see it all. Cause if we didn't see it what would it all be. What if none of it existed...really what would that be ? think about it. You create your own life, you create everything around you whether you are aware of it or your not. Try thinking about a random person give it a week and they will contact you or you will run into them. This is our world "god" is living through us. You keep your self successful or you keep yourself awkward or anxious, there is something you learn from it. Your Ego gives you something. or simply your loving nature gives you something. The people you pass by on the street you put them there based on what you were thinking. If your scared of fast drivers, you will come in contact with them, if you are annoyed by slow drivers u will always get stuck behind one. Because thats what you are thinking about, whether its what you don't want or not, you are still thinking about it so it comes to you. its hard to get a handle on what you think, what opinions you form and what you are taking in around you. Don't live in fear, don't argue, just try to figure yourself out. Its all science. Its energy. we deal with it everyday. When u are sitting at a traffic light and you look over at a person, then right after the person looks back. It seems like they could feel you glance. They could, its all in us, we just arn't informed. Understand, the truth is inside of you. Stop following religions and different ideas and just look within yourself, seriously and try to figure it out.

I had to Google for this. Michael told me a bit about the story over lunch a couple of Saturdays ago, and he was obviously not pleased with what Conexant did to the remains of his company. It takes a lot of really smart people working very hard to build anything worthwhile, but it doesn't take much at all to destroy it. I've seen it multiple times, including at the company Michael and I have in common: Datapoint.

The "fight" between nothingness and everything had to be seen, the universe has to be self aware.

Lots of reasons for this but they are all inherently derivative, because to derive something it must be created or defined hence the 'everything'. Awareness or consciousness, think about those words. They just mean "having some thing" and isn't that everything.

Leverage to choose what we will see before we ever see it. Enter into things with preconceptions; but what could possibly be a PREconception? Before something exists?

We get to choose reality because we are reality.

Lots of cable modem disconnects with time warner. But they never fix the cause even though they know what it
is. I have had a tech come out two times. Took about 6 calls to get this. Each tech finds the same problem but time warner never fixes it. Here is the problem on my long street I have two demarcation points or underground boxes (with hubs?) that belong to time warner. One box is about 15 feet from my house. The other is at the far end of my long street. The hub (box) that is about 15 feet away is where I should be connected to...but I am not my house is connected to the one at the way end of the street. I am I quote "the last house on the end of the line". So the techs say that is the problem.....but for some reason they are not allowed to fix it or just don't care enough to do it right. Can anybody shed some light on this?

Rob,

There's a great quote that your post brings to mind:

"You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want." -Zig Ziglar, From his book entitled, 'Secrets of Closing the Sale'

If you were only able to learn just one concept of marketing, this to me would be it.

If we're focused on helping others succeed, then what we need and want will come as a by-product of that. It's the same thing as that Bible verse about "seeking first the kingdom and all this will be added unto you". It's the same as when we are in relationship, if both partners are always seeking a win for the others and not just WIIFM, then they both win.

There’s a great quote that your post brings to mind:

“You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” -Zig Ziglar, From his book entitled, ‘Secrets of Closing the Sale’

If you were only able to learn just one concept of marketing, this to me would be it.

If we’re focused on helping others succeed, then what we need and want will come as a by-product of that. It’s the same thing as that Bible verse about “seeking first the kingdom and all this will be added unto you”. It’s the same as when we are in relationship, if both partners are always seeking a win for the others and not just WIIFM, then they both win.

Hi,

I am probably going to sound a bit stupid, but I am stuck. So please forgive me.

I have setup the NAS weeks ago with two 500gb Sata drive. They are set to mirrored.

What I thought was going to be easy, has turned into something that i don't even know if it can be done. Essentially this motherboard I am using only supports two sata ports, so instead of having to find another machine I though I would attempt to connect in a IDE drive.

From here I get lost. I had some minor trouble with the BIOS settings after I connected the new IDE drive, but managed to get pass this ok. BIOS recognises both the 2 Sata drive and the new IDE i just installed. However when going into the FREENAS admin screen this IDE drive is no where to be found. I can't seem to add it as it just doesn't show up.

If anyone can please provide me with the process to add this IDE drive to the storage "pool" this would be really appreciated. Once again I apologise if this questions has been discussed already, but I couldn't seem to find anyone experiencing the same issue specifically.

Also whats is making life a bit hard is that I seem to have a difference version of FREENAS to what is used in most tutorials. Mine looks nothing like what is used in these screen shots and I do not have a Disk Management area. Rather it refers to "volumes"

Thank you
