I always thought Steve Irwin would die young - but imagined it would be from something commonplace, like a car accident.  But no, he died in a most unusual way.

I couldn’t readily find any stats and human deaths caused by stingray, but I imagine it is remarkably small.

Well, I read that there is one previous documented death by stingray - and that was in 1945 in Australia. So, fairly rare then. Typical of the man though.

I figured this would be rare. Now I wonder if they’ll ever air any of the special they were filming - not the actual death - that would be creepy. But I think they should at least show the “acceptable footage” they took.

I bet his last words HAD to include something like: AW, Crikey! That’s gotta hurt !!”

Hah! Tom - nice to see you stop by here. Don’t think I know you, but I’m sure we’re related somehow!

“as of 1996, worldwide known deaths from stingray barb injuries numbered 17″

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stingray which has already been updated to mention Steve Irwing’s horrible freak accident.

Well, I’ll assume Wikipedia is right, although it doesn’t rate really high on my “trust-radar”. Sure, I know over time it is generally proven accurate, but I also think that “the one time I rely on it” it will be wrong, because some jackass was entering bogus data!

All of us must show some respect to this guy who every day presented the wonders of the wild life and made us felt like part of the crew.
