It’s been a long time since I had a houseful of kids. When I was married, we always had the house the kids hung out at – but since my divorce, and winning custody, I’ve pretty much eliminated other kids coming over. I just didn’t want to be put in the position where I could be blamed for something (like kids sneaking alcohol, etc). And I certainly wasn’t comfortable with Lauren having her friends over – you just don’t know what people will do or say these days.
Anyway, today there are six teenagers over, all playing XBOX on Hi-Def TV’s in the family room. The last time I went out there they were still playing Halo2. It’s pretty cool watching multiple people on multiple big screen TVs all playing in the same game. Actually, it’s amazing – especially since it all set up so easily, and it all works so well.
Anyway, I am back in my bedroom, watching the Master’s golf tournament – and staying out of the kid’s way. But I here them yelling, and laughing, and it’s a good sound. I hadn’t realized how much I missed having a houseful of kids (even though it’s hard to call these 16-18 year old students "kids").
I made a huge pot of chili in Thursday, in preparation for today. I got it ready to eat, put it on simmer, told the kids, then disappeared. Yoshi is here in the bedroom with me – wondering why he gets to come and lay in my bed in the middle of the day.
But it’s a cold and rainy day – a good day for chili – and a good day to sit around in bed watching golf. And doing nothing.
