Mountaintop Removal Movie from iLoveMountains.org

One more thing to worry about.  But I do think it’s important to get the word out on this.  It’s tragic.

Mountaintop removal is a radical form of coal mining in which entire mountains are literally blown up — and it is happening here in America on a scale that is almost unimaginable.

Mountaintop removal is devastating hundreds of square miles of Appalachia; polluting the headwaters of rivers that provide drinking water to millions of Americans; and destroying a distinctly American culture that has endured for generations.

But mountaintop removal can be stopped — with the help of people like you.

On this site, you can explore the National Memorial for the Mountains, watch a video about mountaintop removal featuring Woody Harrelson, share your prayers for the mountains and more.

  1. I was shocked the first time I had to go to West Virginia to visit a flooring mill there in my last job. The mill was located on one of these flattened mountain tops and it was quite a ride to get there. As we wound our way up the side of the mountain, loads of debris is exactly what you saw in the valley. The person I was riding with said, “Look at all those new trees, the mining companies are under law to leave those”. That is likely the least thing they could do and that is all that the state demanded.

Sure, the companies that do such things to the earth are corrupt, but state governments that allow it are equally corrupt. The system is broken in many ways when it, as the video points out, sacrifices the very people it is supposed to serve and protect.
