New Zealand sonic boom blamed on meteor – Space News – MSNBC.com

In 1986 I was riding a 1984 Honda Gold Wing motorcycle from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, TX.  It was 3am or so and I was the only vehicle in sight.

I heard a very loud boom and couldn’t figure out what it was.  For a millisecond I thought a tire had gone (bad news on a bike!).  I pulled to the side of the road to investigate what else might have gone wrong.

Before I could come to a complete stop the sky lit up and I not only saw a meteor, I heard it – it literally sounded like it went right over my head.  Instead it hit in a field about 5 miles away (I found out later).

It was an amazing sight, and I sat at the side of the road, in the middle of nowhere for quite some time – just staring up at the stars and wondering what I didn’t know about them.
