Outrageous Injustice

A consensual sex act between two minors – one 17 and one 15 lands the young man ten years in prison – with no hope of parole.  Don’t mess around in Georgia, boys and girls!

This is actually tragic.

Genarlow Wilson and his friends checked into the Days Inn right off Interstate 20. At some point in the night, according to court documents and evidence presented at trial, some girls came over to party with them. Bourbon and marijuana were consumed. One of the young men turned on a video camera.

“We can set aside his sentence,” Barker says. “Legally, it’s still possible for us to set aside his sentence and give him a new sentence to a lesser charge. But it’s up to us. He has no control over it.”

The position of Barker and the district attorney, McDade, who refused to comment, is that Wilson is guilty under the law and there is no room for mercy, though the facts seem to say they simply chose not to give it to Wilson. At the same time this trial was under way, a local high school teacher, a white female, was found guilty of having a sexual relationship with a student — a true case of child molestation. The teacher received 90 days. Wilson received 3,650 days.

  1. Kathy – that’s a good question.

I’m afraid the answer is probably that this case won’t get them on CNN and The Today Show.

  2. I saw this story on ESPN yesterday, and was appalled. But here’s what I want to know – why is the most outspoken person in this case a rich white man (Mark Cuban)? So much for racism. Where are Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson now??? Why aren’t they involved in helping this young man?

  3. Paul, the way I look at it, some of the “backward: countries have a more fair system. When you talk “an eye for an eye” or a “hand for a hand” at least you know EXACTLY what you are bargaining with. Here, and eye might equal a fingernail in one place, and an arm in another. And depending on if you are White, or Black or Hispanic, the punishment shifts again.

How can anyone think that is fair? Where IS our Supreme Court, anyway? I saw them at the State of the Union Address – I think they are real. So what are they doing?

How about our lawbreakers – err, Law Maker’s? Where are they? Passing pork under the table? They sure aren’t doing what we elected them to do.

I’m lost for explanation for this lack even of interest, much less action.

  4. And I agree with THAT! That, to me, is the biggest mystery! HOW can they get away with this? WHY is nobody protesting? I mean… really YELLING “WE’RE NOT TAKING THIS ANYMNORE!!!” …
Of course I have no voice: I’m not an American. And I have long been opposed to becoming an American citizen, but I would ALMOST become one so that I can start raising hell! (After all: I DO live here (invited by Americans, no, blackmailed into coming here) and I DO pay taxes here!).
Take this Internet poker thing for instance: all MILLIONS of poker players are outraged, but NOTHING is really being done. Nobody seems to REALLY care that our freedom is being taken away from us. And of course that’s insignificant compared to the lack of justice! Take this kid’s 10 year sentence. Where’s the justice in that? And yet, mention the justice system to ANY american, and even the most educated american will say something like :well, yes, it may not be perfect, but it’s still the best in the world” .. HELLO??? Wake up America! It’s one of the most backward, antiquated and dysfunctional systems in the “west”. IT DOESN’T WORK! Look around! *runs off, looking for a bigger soap box*

  5. Paul – I couldn’t agree more – but my question is, “Why don’t people seem to give a damn”? Why aren’t we protesting? Why aren’t we “dumping the tea in the harbor” and raising holy hell?

Just fat and happy? Fat and Lazy? Uneducated? I don’t get it.

  6. Pure insanity.
From my point of view the prosecutor should be the one who needs to be locked up (although I’m sure he goes to church every Sunday).
    This is criminal.
There are things going on in this country that are getting scarier every day … from that whole Internet poker thing, to the lady being arrested for having anti-Bush bumper stickers to getting a 10 year no-parole sentence for having consensual sex .. (the list is actually extremely long .. you can’t even play the board game of Monopoly legally in South Carolina .. so much for living in a ‘free’ country).
