About thirty years ago I wrote one of the longest papers I have ever written – it was about the H. L. Hunley. I was only about ten, yet I typed over 100 pages on an old manual typewriter. My teacher was somewhat shocked, since it was a simple assignment. I was obsessed.
I thought I had learned everything there was to know about the Hunley at that time, so I find it fascinating that scientists are able to find more information now – after all of these years. There has been a lot of conjecture about how the Hunley sank, and I will be mesmerized with the continued evaluation of this relic.
Once it’s on display I plan on visiting Charleston to view the sub – I think that will be very special for me. Some kids were fixated on Superman, or Firemen – I was fixated on this ship, and her crew, and her unexpected demise. I’ve always been a history buff, but this ship was the focus of that fixation.
I can’t wait until more of the puzzle pieces are put together! I am still obsessed.
